Padmapur (Bargarh), September 14, 2026: A Serious Choking Man's Life Saved intime by 108 Ambulance team of Odisha.
In a race against time, the swift response and on-site emergency care provided by a 108 ambulance team saved the life of an elderly man who had collapsed semi-conscious after choking on food.
The incident occurred in Jamkhar village under Padmapur sub-division of Bargarh district. Shesha Suna 60yrs was having a meal at home when food became lodged in his windpipe, triggering severe choking. Struggling to breathe, he gasped for air and collapsed unconscious within moments.
Noticing his critical condition, his family member Rabindra Suna and alert villagers called the 108 emergency helpline without delay. Acting swiftly on the alert, an Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulance (OD02DL1381) stationed at Padmapur Sub-Divisional Hospital was dispatched. Despite poor, unpaved road conditions leading to Jamkhar village, ambulance pilot Saroj Karei navigated the route deftly to reach the spot without losing critical minutes.
Upon arrival, pharmacist Aliv Swain assessed the patient's critical vitals signs and immediately initiated emergency protocols. Recognizing severe airway obstruction, Swain performed the Heimlich maneuver (abdominal thrusts), successfully dislodging the trapped food particle from the airway.
Following the clearance, Swain administered suction to keep the airway patent, supplied supplemental oxygen, and continuously monitored the patient’s vital signs until he regained stability.
The patient was safely transferred to Padmapur Sub-Divisional Hospital for further medical treatment and care.
The timely call by Rabindra Suna, paired with the rapid transit and on-scene intervention by the emergency medical team, proved decisive in saving the man's life. The family and villagers expressed their heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all the 108 ambulance staff and the state government for the high quality and in time free emergency healthcare services.
